Harrison Barnes got the ball on Victor Wembanyama’s breakaway

San Antonio Spurs forward Harrison Barnes sat down with ClutchPoints recently discussed a number of topics, including his role on a team that has realistic playoff aspirations for the first time in more than five years. During the interview, Barnes also shared a nugget that hinted at what we see from Victor Vembanyama.

“He had an incredible summer,” the second-year Spur told ClutchPoints. “He has worked extremely hard and I think his performance will show what he has done.”

Vembanyama’s summer is well documented. Between hanging out with monks at the Shaolin Temple in China and visiting NASA in Houston, the next-generation talent trained with NBA legends Hakeem Olajuwon and Kevin Garnett. It all came after Wembey’s 2024-2025 season ended due to blood clots diagnosed at the end of his first All-Star Weekend as a player.

“There’s been very few people in this league since I’ve been in this league that I think have put together some of the work that he’s put in this summer,” Barnes added. “And I know he feels good about it. As a teammate going through some of that work with him, it was great to see him committed to having a great season.”

Now in its 14th season, Barnes he teamed up with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Luka Doncic and De’Aaron Fox.

Harrison Barnes singles out the Spurs star Stephen Castle

Vembanjama was not the only young star at Spurs which Barnes opened up about. When asked about the crowded point guard room, the 33-year-old veteran mentioned Stephon Castle.

“I think the thing with Steph, it’s funny. Every time I look at his stuff, I feel like he’s growing. I feel like he came into the league at 6-foot-4, and now I don’t know if Steph is 6-foot-6. It’s just crazy.”

The parallel with questions about Vembanyama’s true height proved noteworthy. As Barnes continued with the rest of his answer.

“Guys can play above their position, but in general I think the league is going to have as many high-skilled, high-IQ players on the court at the same time,” he said. “In some respects, people want to talk about non-position basketball at multiple positions, and then on the other side it’s like, well, we have too many point guards. So it’s like there’s a balance between, ‘Okay, are they just good basketball players or are they point guards?’

So far, the Spurs have not had to deal with multiple players in the same position. De’Aaron Fox started the season on the injured list. Shortly before returning, Dylan Harper is out with a left calf strain.

“I think the beauty of what’s ahead for us as a team is we have a lot of guys who can do a lot of things with the ball and now have the ability to grow in the game off the ball,” Barnes continued.

“In a sense, it’s who is it? Is it out of position or do you have too many guys crowded into one spot?”

Barnes and the Spurs hope to find out soon. Meanwhile, the former Golden State Warrior and his current teammates will look even back to back against his old team.
