Darius Garland’s injury status against the Raptors

When it comes to the question of whether Darius Garland game tonight against the Raptors, the answer is no.
Garland is coming off Sunday’s win over the Los Angeles Clippers, where he scored eight points, dished out eight assists and pulled down a rebound in 29 minutes. He returned Friday night against the Indiana Pacers with 20 points and seven assists in 27 minutes of action. Before the game, Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson detailed how Cleveland would handle Garland’s injury situation, comparing it to toe injuries seen in football.
“It’s not linear. There’s going to be some little hiccups, and we’re just going to have to deal with it,” Atkinson said. “And fortunately, it’s been nothing too bad. Really, just certain plays that bother him, and we’re going to have to help him get through that. I told him (on Sunday) that we’re going to have to really communicate in terms of how he’s feeling — not just on the leg, but conditioning-wise. So it’s a little tricky.
“We’re very conservative with how we deal with injuries and get guys back to kind of get back into performance. But I see Brock Purdy and Joe Burrow (cases). Just like, man, let’s keep moving forward little by little. I’m just saying there’s going to be some bumps in the road.”
As with many early season games, the Cavs will be missing a significant number of players. In addition to Garland, De’Andre Hunter, Jarrett Allen, Sam Merrill and Craig Porter Jr. will not play; Merrill will be shut out for four straight games and Allen will miss three straight. Porter will miss his second straight and Dean Wade is listed as questionable with a hyperextended right knee.
Cleveland will rely heavily on Donovan Mitchell’s MVP-like heroics and Evan Mobley, who is supposed to get revenge on Scotty Barnes for their last meeting.
“We’re definitely going to go there in the short term (Monday) night, but we’ll have Donovan and Evan, so that gives us a chance,” Atkinson said after Sunday night’s game. “Our bench will have to play great again.”
