Jamal Murray talks about what Nikola Jokic means to Denver

The Denver Nuggets‘ Road game at the end of December against the Miami Heat quickly turned from routine to disturbing after center superstar Nikola Jokic went down with a scary knee injury just before half-time. Jokić crumpled to the floor under the basket after an awkward collision, immediately clutching his left knee in concern spread across the arena.
Jokic’s injury occurred when teammate Spencer Jones accidentally stepped on his foot while being pushed by Jaime Jaquez Jr. from Miami, causing the three-time MVP’s knee to hyperextend. Jokić, who had 21 points, eight assists and five rebounds in just 19 minutes. limped into the locker room at halftime and did not return. Denver ended up falling 147-123, their third loss in four games.
After the game, Jamal Murray dealt with the situation as he spoke to reporters in the locker room with clear concern, especially given his own history with knee injuries.
“I mean, I just want the best. The first thing that came to mind was, I hope it’s not what I had” Murray said, via AltitudeTV. “So as long as it’s not the equation, obviously it’s part of the game. But we never want that to happen. I’ll talk to him soon.”
Murray’s comments reflect both empathy and uncertainty as Denver awaits official word on Jokic’s status. When asked how the team is preparing for the possibility of playing without its cornerstone, Murray outlined a familiar but difficult approach.
“It’s the same kind of mentality. Just the next man up, we’ve got to focus on what’s here,” Murray added. “Obviously, he’s not just a big part of what we do, but almost everything we do. So we just want to see him healthy as much as possible. We just want to see him healthy and everybody here ready to step up.”

The Nuggets will need just that mentality if Jokic misses time. The Serbian star is in the midst of his probably best seasonaveraging nearly a 30-point triple-double while leading the league in both rebounds and assists. His absence would affect everything from Denver’s offensive flow to its playoff positioning.
Aside from immediate injury concerns, Jokic remains near the top of the All-Star fan vote and is once again the favorite for MVP honors. Meanwhile, Murray’s own strong season puts him on the brink of his first All-Star selection, adding another layer of intrigue to Denver’s upcoming stretch.
The focus for now remains primarily on Jokic’s health, but the next few games will test Denver’s depth, resilience and ability to adapt without the player who defines almost everything they do.
