Matt Campbell promises recruiting he’ll love

Head coach Matt Campbell didn’t even coach the game at the Penn State football team still, but his early moves make it clear that he plans to rebuild the Nittany Lions from the inside out. One of his first big moves was to lure Derek Hudger from Iowa State to be his chief of staff at State College.

Long viewed as Campbell’s “GM” behind the scenes in Ames, Hujer has been central to the Cyclones’ ability to assemble competitive, system-friendly rosters without blue-blood resources. Bringing him to Penn State is a loud signal that roster building, evaluation and long-term identity will be at the heart of Campbell’s tenure.

From there, Campbell addressed the high school ranks directly with a message tailored to Pennsylvania and the surrounding region. Speaking of his recruiting philosophy, he exhibited an aggressivefirst local draft via Daniel Gallen on Ks.

“You’re in the most fertile ground for high school football excellence within a six- to eight-hour radius. It’s all going to start with building high school football and continuing to do a great job in this state and our surrounding states. No one is going to attack more than us.”

For a fan base that has long wanted Penn State to lock down its backyard, that’s exactly the kind of promise they’ve been waiting to hear from the next head coach.

Campbell’s hiring itself came after a thorough process who even made it to the NFL. Before finalizing a deal with the former Iowa State coach, Penn State interviewed Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Reese, a 33-year-old rising player with roots at Notre Dame and Alabama.

Reese was reportedly impressed enough to remain in serious discussion late in the search, and his candidacy showed how open the school was to a younger, offense-focused profile before ultimately settling on Campbell’s proven resume to build a program.

Now, with Hudger on board and a clear promise to dominate regional recruiting, Campbell’s early blueprint at Penn State comes into focus: keep the core footprint close, evaluate relentlessly and build a roster solid enough to match the identity he forged in Ames, only now on a much bigger stage.
