Why NC State will cover the spread/win

NC State plays good defense. They allowed 66.7 points per game, fourth fewest in the ACC. The Wolf Pack allows the fewest 3-pointers per game and the second fewest attempts per game. That said, NC State does a good job staying out of foul trouble. In their last five games, the Wolfpack have allowed just 67.6 points per game. If NC State can continue their strong defensive play, they will win this game.

Virginia Tech doesn’t score a ton of points, so NC State shouldn’t have a problem on defense. The Hokies are scoring the third-fewest points per game and the fourth-fewest shots in the ACC. They also don’t get to the free throw line very often, nor do they shoot much from the charity stripe. Virginia Tech also leads the ACC in turnovers per game. This is something NC State needs to take advantage of. If the Wolf Pack can do that, they will be able to win on the road.

Why Virginia Tech will cover the spread/win

NC State has lost three of its last four games. Those losses came against Virginia, Wake Forest and North Carolina. In those four games, the Wolfpack is allowing just 63.3 points per game. When a team scores anything over 60 points, it becomes very difficult to win basketball games. NC State doesn’t shoot the ball very well, and that has been very evident lately. This is something Virginia Tech must take advantage of. If they can keep NC State down, they will be able to win at home.

Virginia Tech, as mentioned, doesn’t score a ton of points. For their scoring, the Hokies rely on two players. Those players are Toby Lawal and Miliael Poteat. The two are shooting more than 50 percent combined, and Laval can knock down the three if he gets open. They are the two best players on the team, and Virginia Tech needs to be at their best if they want to move to .500 in conference play. If Laval and Poteat play well, expect the Hokies to win this matchup.

Neither team is playing great. Neither team is satisfied with their current position in the ACC. However, I think this game will be good. The range is only 2.5, and for good reason. The Wolfpack and Hokies are pretty even teams. I’m leaning towards NC State in this game, though. They are the better team and should be able to pull out a win in the conference.
