On November 12, 2010, Kevin Love doubled his 31st year
Many forget this, but, before joining the Cavaliers to form the “Big Three” along with LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love was part of the cream of the interior of the league.
As proof, between 2010 and 2014, the Wolves forward averaged 23.5 points, 13.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists (45% shooting, 37% 3-point shooting, and 82% shooting), totaling three top-three All-Star appearances and two top-two NBA All-Star appearances in the same time period. Not forgetting the trophy for the best improvement of the year and the title for the best jumper in the league, obtained at the end of the great season 2010/11: 20.2 points, 15.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists on average, 47% on the shot, 41% on 3 points and 85%!
And we are going to focus on one of the meetings of this famous financial year 2010/11. At the time, the Minnesota franchise hosted the Knicks in a balanced lineup (on paper). On the one hand, Minneapolis players can count on Kevin Love, but also Darko Milicic and prospects Michael Beasley and Wesley Johnson. On the other hand, New York relies on Amar’e Stoudemire, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari and Wilson Chandler (but not yet Carmelo Anthony, which will arrive a few months later).
But you will understand, the interior of the Wolves will be highlighted on November 12, 2010. However, he will experience a complicated first quarter with no points and two low rebounds. If the Minnesota franchise is behind on the scoreboard, it has completely changed its face, from 57-78 to 87-87 (!) in ten minutes, under the leadership of its young wolf. And in the fourth quarter, the 22-year-old forward will continue his momentum. Resolute on defense (yes, yes), he makes Amar’e Stoudemire – a five-time All-Star at the time – look like a puny kid. From now on, nothing seems to stop the Minneapolis team from winning.
Kevin Love will finally highlight his 3-point masterpiece, to offer his team an unexpected success. He finished with 31 points, 31 rebounds (including 12 offensive) and 5 assists on the clock. All at 11/26 on shots and 8/10 on throws. As for his stats in the second half alone, they are insane: 25 points and 22 rebounds!
Before this legendary night, there were only 18 players who had a minimum of 30 points and 30 rebounds in League history (Wilt Chamberlain also has 124 such games). The Wolves interior therefore inherited Moses Malone (1982), the last to achieve such a feat. Then we’ll have to wait for Dwight Howard, March 2018to find any trace of such 30-30 in the NBA.
