Paul Morris is getting real on the potential return of Matthew Tkachuk

Matthew Tkachuk took an important step forward in his recovery on Sunday. he is training with the Florida Panthers for the first time this season. It marked his return to the ice more than four months after he passed surgery in August to repair a torn adductor muscle and a sports herniainjuries that have sidelined one of the franchise’s most important hitters since last spring.

While Tkachuk’s presence at practice was encouraging, the Panthers head coach Paul Maurice was careful to temper expectations, especially with The NHL Winter Classic looms later this week against the New York Rangers at loanDepot Park in Miami. Maurice made it clear that the decision whether Tkachuk can play in that outdoor game will be driven by medical criteria, not emotion or spectacle.

“There’s a whole bunch of things he has to go through, and the question is, is there enough time?” Morris said, via NHL.com. “He might be healthy enough or close to being healthy enough to play. But we’re not speculating on this. There are numbers he has to hit.”

Morris emphasized that Tkachuk is working on long layoffs and why caution is key for a player who is expected to be a major part of Florida’s long-term plans.

“It’s been six months since he’s played in a hockey game. As much as we love the spectacle of it, as much as we’d like him to be a part of it, it would be great for the game to see him out there. But the Florida Panthers need him healthy and need him for the rest of the year,” Morris added.

The coach also emphasized that the final call will not come from the bench. “It’s really not my decision and it shouldn’t be. The doctors will inform the player and the player and the doctors will make the decision,” Morris said.

Tkachuk skated in a yellow non-contact jersey during exercise, a sign that he is still progressing through the recovery stages. His return would be a big boost for a Panthers team that is also missing captain Alexander Barkov, who remains sidelined after knee surgery.

Tkachuk last played in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finalswhere Florida won its second straight championship. Despite missing the final 25 games of the regular season last year, he returned in the playoffs and tied for the team lead with 23 points in 23 games, underscoring his impact when healthy.

January remains a realistic target for Tkachuk’s return, and that deadline would allow him to strengthen ahead of international duty after being named Team USA preliminary roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
