Peyton Watson comes out of the corner and becomes a “playmaker”
Peyton Watson he has not yet extended his contract with the Nuggets. The deal could be concluded this Monday, but the young defender is already satisfied with one important point: he lived through the summer without any physical problems.
“Last summer I didn’t play much and I got injured before the start of the season. This summer I was able to play a lot more and it was the best possible thing for my body. I’ve never felt so good to start a season”, he announces.
And that’s good news for Denver. The Nuggets are counting on Peyton Watson to take on a new dimension, especially in a more central role coming off the bench. The staff wanted to strengthen the experience around Nikola Jokićand the background will be tasked with organizing the replacement attack.
Long confined to a static role, as illustrated by his 76 3-point shots from the corner last season, he should now have the ball in his hand and conduct the orchestra more often.
“Still in development”
“Still in development”specifies David Adelman. “Peyton was really impressive. The difference is going to be made when the opposing defense puts their best defender on him and we want him to release the ball. Are other players going to be able to take over? You have to know the instructions, like Jamal Murray or Aaron Gordon, for example. So it’s not just about picking up the ball, it’s about knowing what you want to do when you want to do it.
Author of the best season of his career with an average of 8.1 points last campaign, Peyton Watson will therefore need to show more initiative in the 2025/26 season.
“The coaching staff really believed in me and supported me during the preseason and training camp, so I was able to play my way and have the ball in my hands.”confirms the 23-year-old player. “I have to make decisions. I was able to work on a lot of things during the matches. It’s always good for confidence, to be sharp. I feel very good.”
