‘Phenomenal’ review of Philipp Grubauer’s 41 save gem

The Seattle Kraken they continued their well part of Monday Night Hockey with a convincing 5-1 away win over the Calgary Flames, and the story started again in the crease.

Goaltender Philipp Grubauer turned in one of his strongest performances of the season, stopping 41 shots to seal the victory that extended Seattle’s point streak to eight games. After the victory, Grubauer admitted adversity his team faced off before turning the script late on.

“In the second period, we were under fire a little bit, but we were able to come out and get out of that period with a tie,” Grubauer said via Seattle Kraken social media. “And it was, I think, a phenomenal third period, different than the other night (4-1 win against the Nashville Predators), for sure. We were giving them less time and less space and not giving them time to make some plays. I thought that was amazing, and that’s how we should play.”

Calgary struck first as power forward Adam Klapka opened the scoring in the first period, giving his team a 1-0 lead. The Flames controlled long stretches early, outscoring Seattle 13-8 in the first frame and continuing to pressure Grubauer throughout the second. Despite being under siege, the veteran netminder made several momentum-saving stops that kept the game from slipping away.

Seattle’s offense finally got going midway through the second period when rookie Jacob Melanson scored his first NHL goal, tying the game on a sharp pass from Ryan Winterton. From there, the Kraken took control.

Shane Wright gave Seattle the lead early in the third with a pass in front, Vince Dunn followed a few minutes later quick shot from the slot. Freddie Gaudreau and Matti Beniers added late goals to seal the outcome, turning a close contest into a runaway.

Grubauer finished with 41 saves and now surrenders just one goal in his last four startsa part that includes multiple high impact performances. Since a 4-2 loss to Calgary on Dec. 18, Seattle has gone 7-0-1, reestablishing itself as a legitimate Pacific Division climber.

With the Boston Bruins coming to Climate Pledge Arena, the Kraken will look to carry this formula over in time, scoring timely goals, defensive urgency and elite goaltending as they continue to build momentum in the heart of the season.
