Pierre Lebrun’s guess on Conor Bedard’s next contract

As it is Chicago Blackhawks start the season strong, there have been big signings signed by young players around the league. The The Utah Mammoth signed Logan Cooley to an eight-year contract worth $10 million per season. As the third overall pick from the 2022 season signs his contract, attention is starting to turn to the top pick in the 2023 draft. The Athletics’ Pierre LeBrun has a guess as to what Connor BedardHis first big contract could be with the Blackhawks.

“As one might imagine, the Chicago Blackhawks approached Bedard’s camp over the summer, led by Greg Landry of Newport Sports, and started that discussion. They talked conceptually, which usually means some numbers would come up. But it doesn’t sound like it went too far,” Lebrun reported. “My understanding is that neither side has determined exactly how far down the road they’ve kicked the ball. It’s a fluid delay. They might pick it up again in the new year. It might wait until the end of the season. Anyway, nothing is imminent on that front.”

What could a deal actually look like with a deal between the Blackhawks and Bedard? “I’m totally speculating here, but I think Chicago will do what they can to hold out for eight years max, while I wouldn’t be surprised if Newport Sports insisted on five. In five years, I could see something in the $10 million average annual value range, or a little above. In seven or eight years, you’re looking at more — plus $12 million.”

The Blackhawks drafted Bedard first in 2023 and continue to build a team around the rising star. Frank Nazar is one piece that has already earned his extension. Keeping Bedard should be their top priority, regardless of the cost. But they still need more pieces to become a legitimate Stanley Cup contender.

Bedard recently scored his first hat trick and continues Year 3 on Saturday when the Blackhawks face the Edmonton Oilers.
