Spurs’ Chris Paul reveals conversations with Gregg Popovich during coaching absence

The San Antonio Spurs they played most of the 2024-25 season without head coach Gregg Popovich after he suffered a mild stroke in early November. But even though he’s not on the sidelines, Coach Pop made sure to keep an eye on his team.

Chris Paul revealed that Popović calls him after the games to log in and reveal what he saw.

Via ESPN:

“I’m not even sure if this is public, but he’s calling,” Paul said. “He calls after the games and I talk to him and he tells me what he sees, and I appreciate that more than anything because he doesn’t have to do that.” And he does.”

That’s not a huge surprise considering how dedicated Pop is to the game of basketball and the Spurs organization. CP3 joined San Antonio thanks in part to Popovic and of course, the Victor Vembanyama phenomenon as well. The Spurs sit at 19-22 and just outside the Play-In conversation under HC Mitch Johnson.

It is still unknown when Coach Pop will be back with the team, but Spurs CEO RC Buford said he is recovering well:

“All I can share is that he’s attacking his rehab in a way that … you know Dad, you’ve watched him for years,” Buford, one of Popovich’s closest associates, said Wednesday. “The same resilience he’s shown throughout our coaching career, he’s approaching his rehab comeback in an incredibly unique way.” The relationships he had with our former players and the care they share with him is incredible. And his improvement continues.”

There is no timetable for Popović’s return. That being said, he’s clearly all he can get back at the helm of this young squad. Spurs and their fans are definitely missing a legend.
