Sydney Sweeney’s Christy is one of the worst box office flops ever
Unfortunately, despite the actress Sidney Sweeney receives critical acclaim for her performance in the Christie biopicwhich tells the story of Christy Martin, was a flop at the box office in its opening weekend.
The numbers report to Christie grossed $1,305,000 in its opening weekendmaking it her third consecutive film to gross under $2 million in its opening weekend.
Americana — which was originally slated to premiere in 2023 before Lionsgate acquired distribution rights and released in 2025 — grossed under $1 million at the box office.
Her next film, Eden, earned just $1,048,374 in its opening weekend. However, it was only shown in 664 theaters across the United States.
Why Sydney Sweeney’s Christi flop?

There are several reasons why a movie fails at the box office. Sweeney was the subject of criticism following her recent campaign for American Eagle jeans.
However, this isn’t the only biopic about a combat sports legend that has been underwhelming at the box office. Smashing Machine, which, like Christie, features a career-defining performance from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, grossed just under $6 million in its opening weekend. It has grossed around $20.2 million worldwide since its October 2025 theatrical release.
In the past, Sweeney has scored hits at the box office. Anyone But You, a rom-com also starring Glenn Powell, grossed over $220 million worldwide.
Shortly after Anyone But You, Sweeney starred in Madame Web, the Spider-Man spin-off, which was a disaster. It barely made $100 million worldwide during its theatrical run.
Amidst all her failures at the box office, she made a hit. Immaculate was a neon horror film released in March 2024. It grossed over $5.3 million in its opening weekend and grossed over $35 million throughout its run. Sweeney produced a horror film.
Let’s hope Sweeney’s luck turns around with one of her future projects. She will next star in the horror film The Housemaid, directed by Paul Feig.
In Christy, Sweeney plays boxing legend Christy Martin. The biopic — directed by David Michaud — chronicles her rise to fame and her relationship with husband James W. Martin (Ben Foster) who became a coach.
