The Cavaliers are bending the Grizzlies in the final quarter
Facing a team of Grizzlies two weeks late Cavaliers had to assume their status at home. However, it wasn’t easy, since they trailed by about ten points for a good half hour, while I Morant quickly left with an injury, the evening of the big return from Zach Edey.
But, thanks to a smoothly conducted fourth quarter (32-16) and a Donovan Mitchell (30 points) unsustainable at the end, not forgetting solid Evan Mobley (22 points, 13 rebounds, 4 blocks) on his side, Cleveland continued his march forward and managed to make the difference at the right time, against Memphis (108-100). The style leaves something to be desired, but the essentials are assured.
Jaren Jackson Jr. (26 points, but at 6/23) tried to get the Grizzlies back on track, except the mission promises to be more and more dangerous. Especially since, when the offense is so uninspired, this isn’t forgiving against a Cavaliers team that has the advantage of holding a small lead. Even when it is in a difficult three quarters.
WHAT TO REMEMBER
– Cleveland releases the horses in the final act. Led by the great Donovan Mitchell, the author of 14 of his 30 points in the last twelve minutes, the Cavaliers defeated the Grizzlies in the high fourth quarter: 32-16. Trailing by around ten points during the first three quarters, Kenny Atkinson’s players saved the best for last. We will remember two scathing “runs”: the first, 17-5, and the second, 10-0, to first erase all the stops, and then give up forever, for a little less than seven minutes in total. Packed, weighed.
– Ja Morant meets Zack Eddie in the infirmary. Out since the start with an ankle sprain, Zach Edey was finally able to start his second year with the Grizzlies, collecting 13 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals in 25 minutes for his first outing. Unfortunately, Ja Morant takes his place directly on the injured list, as after missing the last game with an ankle sprain, he was forced out in the first quarter after contact with Sam Merrill due to calf discomfort. Frustrating, because he started the match well, especially hitting a nice “reverse layup” in the Cavs racket.
– Memphis is sinking even higher. We’ve long believed that, even without Ja Morant, the Grizzlies would be able to end their ugly streak. Only this now makes it eight defeats in nine matches for Tuomas Iisal’s side, who were in the lead for most of the match but finally caught up in the final moments. The offense wasn’t up to par, and free throws were delayed for long periods, as exemplified by Jaren Jackson Jr., before it all came crashing down at the worst possible time. Between the abundance of turnovers, the too-often given second chances and the award-winning skills on the rise on the Cavs side. And the great Mitchell/Mobley duo.
