The Heat’s perfect Kawhi Leonard trade offer for the Clippers
Are the Los Angeles Clippers will blow everything up? It becomes more likely with each passing loss and bombshell news Chris Paul is being sent home from his farewell tour. But the Clippers are so deep in sunk costs Kawhi Leonard era where they may have no choice but to fight to the very end to prevent a basketball apocalypse by trading their unprotected first-round pick next year to the mighty Oklahoma City Thunder.
For what it’s worth, Leonard is doing his best to beat the Clippers. But despite his impressive scoring nights after returning from ankle and foot injuries, the team around him was so depleted and so shallow that even his best efforts didn’t seem to be enough. They are 6-16 on the season heading into their Friday night matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies, and are dealing with a mountain of injury problems that would make recovery nearly impossible, especially living in a tough East.
There is talent on the Clippers roster, but the vibes droppedthe front office is in chaos and the team is in disarray. Maybe releasing Paul would help LA be more unified as a team, but their team just isn’t very talented, and their defense, which should be their calling card, has been terrible for most of the season.
Even with the Clippers having their 2026 first thanks to the Thunder, there may be a temptation to start things over. And that could eventually pave the way for Miami Heat to swoop in and get another game changer from the Clippers.
Kawhi Leonard joins Norman Powell on Heat amid Clippers trade
Clippers trade: Kawhi Leonard, Nicolas Batum, Kobe Brown
Heat trade: Andrew Wiggins, Terry Rozier, Kel’el Ware, first round pick MIA 2029 (first protected, otherwise would have traded two second round picks)

It must be said that there is there’s no way the Heat would want to shake up their team at this point — especially not for an aging, injury-prone star like Leonard. The vibes are impeccable in South Beach right now, and Leonard, as talented as he is in the playoffs, would also change the dynamic of that locker room.
It’s no secret that it is The Clippers were giving Leonard special treatment for so long, giving in to his demands as part of their agreement when he joined the team back in July 2019. The Clippers, as far as they’re concerned, see Leonard as a cornerstone of their franchise, for better or for worse.
In Miami, there’s no way Leonard will get that treatment — not under the watchful eyes of head coaches Erik Spoelstra and Pat Riley. Since Leonard has gotten used to so much special treatment in LA, he may be shocked by the difference if the Heat decide to acquire him. For those reasons alone, one would think Miami wouldn’t be interested in him at all — not when the team is thriving under a more egalitarian offense.
This exercise is just to indicate what kind of package the Heat could put together that would reasonably entice the Clippers in a world where there are no off-court concerns surrounding Leonard.
Kel’el Ware will be the starting point of any trade talks between the two teams. Ware is the Heat’s best young prospect, and he’s an intimidating presence around the basket. His 7’5″ wingspan is incredibly difficult to score on, and this allows him to be a dominant force on the glass and around the basket.
But as long as Bam Adebayo is on offense, which would be a long time considering how the team sees him as their cornerstone and lifer in an ideal world, Ware will be relegated to backup duties. That’s a luxury for Miami now, but eventually Ware will have to be paid – can the Heat stomach paying him a huge bonus to be Adebayo’s backup when Bam is healthy?
Vare has started the past four games off the bench, and his results have been mixed. He was dominant on Wednesday, posting 22 points and 10 boards in their game 118-108 loss to the Dallas Mavericksbut his production ceiling is limited as long as Adebayo is healthy, which Miami would like every night.
Spoelstra has experimented with lineups that feature Ware and Adebayo sharing the floor, but has justifiably stayed away from pairing the two for an extended period of time. According to PBP statistics, the Heat posted a net rating of -4.46 in the 103 minutes that Adebayo and Ware shared the court this year. That’s awful and makes it likely that Spoelstra will continue to share his minutes as much as possible.
That said, perhaps the Heat will ultimately decide that packaging a talented center who is limited as a backup to Adebayo in a trade for a bigger star would be the best use of resources. And the Clippers will want Ware — especially if they also trade Zubac to continue adding to their rebuild.
But Ware was untouchable in trade talks for Durant, so this is nothing but a pipe dream for the Clippers because there is no way Leonard is going to be the star that changes Miami’s stance on trading their talented young center.
Andrew Wiggins is the Heat’s most expendable player in the starting lineup if Leonard arrives, and his salary makes the trade much easier to pull off. He also gives the Clippers a starting small forward at a reasonable salary moving forward, at least allowing them to remain semi-competitive so they don’t trade their unprotected pick to the Thunder without much of a fight.
Terry Rozier may have played his last NBA game, but he will simply be included in this trade for salary alignment.
As for first-round draft picks, the Clippers would be looking to fill their depleted chest of draft assets, so any trade for Leonard would have to include them. As for the heat, they know the cost of doing business. And if they truly believe that acquiring Leonard, a two-time NBA Finals MVP, can get them over the line, then two first-rounders are a perfectly reasonable price to pay.
