The perfect destination for Trevon Diggs after the Cowboys exit

An otherwise modest Tuesday afternoon, Dallas Cowboys decided to become the center of conversation about the NFL releasing two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs before their Week 18 finale against the New York Giants.

Now on the surface, this was the most shocking – or at least the second most shocking – roster move of the year for Dallas, as Diggs was the linchpin of the team’s last playoff roster and just signed a nearly $100 million contract through 2023.

Still, from a purely financial perspective, the deal makes some sense, as Diggs would owed $14.5 million in 2026even if there is no guaranteed money on the books. The Cowboys could have kept him, had that money on the books on paper rather than pencil, and hoped to secure the next great running back in free agency or the 2026 NFL Draft. Instead, they decided to make things interesting now, get free promotion and definitely know Diggs is gone no matter what, and as a result the Jones family can plan accordingly.

With the Cowboys now turning their attention to player evaluation in Week 18, with players like Triqueze Bridges, Kellen Carson and Shavon Revel likely to get some snaps if healthy playoff teams across the NFL suddenly find themselves with a potential starting-caliber cornerback who can get on the field immediately for a pass, assuming he throws in a game.

Could a Diggs-loving eliminated team make things interesting? Of course, Diggs had his best seasons under Dan Quinn, and as a Delmarva native, the Washington Chiefs might be tempted to see what he can do in maroon and gold long term. But if he does make a playoff team, there’s one that needs him more than most, as at this point they’d probably take just about any cornerback who can keep up with an opposing wide receiver on the outside in the catch.

The Green Bay Packers I need to get into the Trevon Diggs business

Early in the season, the Green Bay Packers looked good at quarterback.

Sure, they said goodbye to Jair Alexander, a former Pro Bowler in their system, but between two-time Pro Bowler Keisean Nikon, Carrington Valentine and second-year Javon Bullard, the Packers looked like they had enough firepower to keep things going, especially with interception machine Xavier McKinney at free safety.

In Week 18, the Packers still have Nixon, Valentine and Bullard, but lost Kamal Haden for the season in Week 17 and may be without Nate Hobbs, depending on how he recovers from his own injury.

Is Diggs better than Nixon at this stage of the game? It’s hard to say, but he’s certainly better than Valentine and has the potential to give defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley a shot if he ends up at one of the outside linebackers.

Diggs also has ties to the Packers, even if they won’t share the court again this season, in the form of Mike Parsons, another former All-Pro Cowboy who ended up in Green Bay this season after some questionable decisions by the Jones family. In Dallas, Diggs and Parsons were known as good friends, and the duo worked really well together as elite performers at their respective positions. Even if Parsons isn’t healthy enough to play again by the end of the season, and may even miss some time in next year’s preseason, depending on the timeline of his recovery, he knows Hafley’s playbook, the team’s terminology, and would likely be willing to help his former and potential future teammate get back on his feet in the short term.

If the Packers either waive Diggs or convince him to sign as a free agent if no one else does, Parsons could be the deciding factor in Green Bay winning the sweepstakes, especially given the current duo shares the agent.

Can the Packers get by without Diggs? Of course, if they stay healthy, Green Bay’s secondary is still pretty good, and in Week 17, it was their run defense that really let them down against the Baltimore Ravens. But if the Packers decide that pretty well isn’t good enough, especially for a team that could end up with some very tough matchups en route to the Super Bowl, then getting in on the Travon Diggs deal could be the difference between an early playoff exit and a deep run in February as they seek the ultimate honor of returning the Lombardi Trophy to the F Lombardi Trophy.
