The Wings still inherit the 2026 draft jackpot
This week was the Draft “lottery.” WNBAintended to determine which franchise will receive the first pick in 2026. And for the second year in a row, these are Dallas Wings who hit the jackpot, with a new “first choice” after the selection Paige Bookers in 2025, who has since become Rookie of the Year. A logical result, the Texas franchise has a 42% chance of going with this first pick.
“We want someone who wants to win”says Wings wing Maddy Siegrist. “We have an exciting and very united young group. I can’t wait to bring some more here.”
Among the main candidates for the first choice of the next Draft we find Olivia Miles, Ava Pham or even former teammate Paige Bookers at UConn, Azzi benefit. After Wings, Rhys will choose another, then Storm, Mystic, and finally Sky.
“The third pick, especially in this draft, will allow us to get a very good player back.”rejoices the Storm’s GM, Talisa Rhea. “There are a lot of players who can make an immediate impact on their team, which is not always the case. With the third pick, we can get someone who can help us immediately.”
The 2026 draft is scheduled for April 13. Until then, the expansion draft will first consist of the teams of the two new franchises, the Toronto Tempo and the Portland Fire, not forgetting the “free agency” period.
Two steps that can only be taken once the new collective bargaining agreement is ratified by the VNBA and the players’ union. It’s just that the two camps still haven’t reached an agreement, while November 30 – the expiration date of the current CBA – is fast approaching and a “lockout” is becoming more and more plausible…
