Tyler Hero’s look at loss to Mavs highlights 1 challenge of new offense

With The Miami Heat lost to the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night, 119-108, there was one component that is a huge thing for fans involving a star Tyler Herro. While it is The Heat were one of the best teams in the leagueit didn’t show against the Mavericks, as Herro’s usage was an interesting story coming out of the game.

In the first half, it looked like Hero was on his way to having an explosive night, scoring 20 points, making eight of his 12 field goals, two of three from deep. However, Hero would go scoreless in the second half, missing all five of his shot attempts, as well as Miami’s miss Norman Powell with an ankle injury, it might have been easy to think the fullback would get an extra chance.

Still, it’s been an ongoing process for Hero, who is still looking to return to 100 percent after returning from offseason surgery, having now played in five games this season. As he mentioned, Herro is he’s still building chemistry with the team.

“We have a deep team,” Herro said, according to The Miami Herald. “I’m playing with a bunch of great guys, great players on his team. It’s been great for me, and I’m just getting back into the swing of things. And I’m just looking forward to continuing to build chemistry.”

Herro’s usage rate dropped in the second from 27.7 percent to 14.3 percent, citing that his decline was just “not touching the ball” and not anything Dallas did on Wednesday.

“I didn’t really have the ball in the second half,” Herro said of the second half. “It just didn’t find me. It’s fine.”

As shown in Heat destruction of the Clippers last Mondaythe team transformed its offense into a free-flowing, fast-paced offense that paid dividends, leading the NBA in pace with 105.82 possessions per 48 minutes. However, getting a player like Herro back and playing at his strength, along with Norman Powell and others in the new attack, will take time.

“We’ll just figure it out,” Miami captain Bam Adebayo said. “We’re all playing well, so it’s hard to say somebody has the hot hand. But also, we understand that the kid (Herro) can get a bucket at any time. So just understanding that, that’s really a coach’s job. It’s more for us to share the game and figure out how we can all win this game and win.”

Hero was open about it, saying “we’ll see” when asked if outings like this are part of that development, saying that while he’s feeling good, it’s still a “long process” to get back to where he was before the surgery. Coach Erik Spoelstra said after the game that he could have done a better job in the second half to get Herro going.

The Heat are 14-8, and look to bounce back on Friday against the Orlando Magic.
