Tyler Hero’s optimism appears on the injury report for the Timberwolves game

As Norman Powell led the Miami Heat in a victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday night, 125-106, one interesting aspect of the game had to do with injuries Tyler Herro. While it is Herro’s comeback plan from an overheating injury is interesting first, he gets a further update on his status for Tuesday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Monday’s injury report for Miami listed Herro as “suspicious” for the Minnesota contest with a right big toe contusion that has kept him out of the last 11 games. Still, he was available for Sunday’s game against the Pelicans, though he didn’t play a single minute.

On Sunday, Herro was also listed as “questionable” and eventually further upgraded to “available,” but the Heat made sure to say that he is not expected to play because the “boost” process. Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra would tell ClutchPoints before the game against New Orleans that “it’s more about getting the mindset ready for the next step” and that he “approaching” on the way back.

“Well, he’s putting in a lot of work. He’s getting close,” Spoelstra said. “This is just more to get the mindset, you know, ready for the next step. He’s going to travel with us, but, you know, it’s still day-to-day. I don’t have an exact date when he’ll be ready.”

So while it’s positive to see Herro in uniform and still be a question mark, it’s not a safe bet that he’ll play.

As it is The Heat will also be without Sixth Man of the Year candidate Jaime Jaquez Jr., who is nursing a sprained ankle, it remains to be seen when Herro will return. However, Miami showed great promise in business on Sunday against the Pelicans, building a collective effort it caused the offense to click and the defense to get better after allowing a 39-point quarter by new orleans.

“It started with the second unit for three, four minutes, it was great with their multiple efforts,” Spoelstra told ClutchPoints. “It kind of changed the energy of the game. And in the last three minutes of the half, when the starters came back, he did it the right way, putting in a ton of effort. Bam (Adebayo) was sensational defensively. (Davion Mitchell) was everywhere. I think I had Pele (Larsson) during that time, too.”

“And Pele is a human bruiser, you know, with all his activity, and that just carried over into the second half,” Spoelstra continued. “So I wasn’t thrilled with our defense before that. I mean, there were a few explosions, but I liked the offense. The ball was really moving, guys were sharing the ball. It was a fun half offensively, but the defense was a lot better than the second half.”

Either way, Miami (20-16) now begins a four-game Midwest road trip that begins Tuesday against the Timberwolves.
