Tyronn Lue unanswered after Mavericks debacle

The Los Angeles Clippers reached breaking point as another collapse left the head coach Tyronn Lue without a solution and probably without much more time. A 114-110 loss to a down-to-earth Dallas Mavericks team dropped the Clippers to 5-15 and increased the pressure on a franchise that has improved much faster than anyone expected.

Dallas was without nearly every key player and still controlled the game behind rookie Cooper Flagg, who scored a career-high 35 points and outplayed every defender the Clippers sent. The loss came one night after the Clippers blew a 16-point lead against Memphis at home. It also marked the seventh straight loss at home for a team that entered the season believing it could contend for a championship.

Lue did not hide his frustration and admitted that he was unable to find answers in the season that slipped away. He said the Clippers have tried different rotations and concepts, but there is no next step right now. He added that injuries have hurt the team and put him in a funk that hasn’t escaped.

The Clippers failed to shine in Hollywood

The Clippers hoped the duo would Kawhi Leonard and James Harden could help them stabilize. The pair combined for 59 points against Dallas, but the offense again relied on isolation plays and stalling in key areas. Harden said if the Clippers knew how to fix the problems, they wouldn’t be in this position. Leonard said it’s time for the team to climb out of the hole or stay down.

The bigger concern is the effort. Flagg repeatedly got to his favorite spots as the Clippers failed to sustain drives or protect the rim. Lue pointed to the breakdowns at the point of attack and said the team needs to look in the mirror. The players reiterated the need for more energy and stronger collective belief.

The Clippers were a top five defense last season. Now they are among the worst. With a five-game road trip beginning in December, the front office faces pressure to decide if Lue can lead a turnaround or if a trade is the only option left.
