Why people are ‘concerned’ about Damon Jones after gambling charges

Recently, the The NBA world is shaken since a series of arrests by the FBI, including Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, in connection with illegal gambling activities. The second person arrested is the former Cleveland Cavaliers player and coach Damon Joneswho was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
Brian Windhorst of ESPN reported on this recently why some figures in the NBA are currently particularly concerned about Jones’ arrest.
“There are probably some people who are pretty worried about Damon right now,” said one league executive who worked with Jones. “He has nothing to lose and nothing to bargain with – except to shift to other people.”
Jones reportedly had a habit of spending beyond his means both during and after his playing career.
“Multiple friends and former associates say Jones routinely asked them for loans after his playing career ended,” Windhorst reported. “During his time as the coach in Cleveland, Jones often stayed in the guest room of the team’s other coach, sources said.
Windhorst also reported that “Jones’ mother and stepfather have mortgaged their home in Houston to secure his $200,000 bond.”
All in all, it’s certainly possible that Jones knows and is willing to share some information with prosecutors about other figures in the NBA world who could be connected to similar allegations as those against Rozier, Jones and Billups.
Either way, the NBA is probably hoping to get this issue resolved sooner rather than later so they can keep the focus on the product on the court.
