Will Trent Grisham’s quality decision affect Cody Bellinger’s pursuit

New York Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham decided to accept his qualifying offer of $22 million. But that won’t change their plans for free agency when it comes to spending Cody Bellinger.
New York plans to move on Bellinger despite Grisham’s decision on qualifying offer, via Brian Hoch of MLB.com. After an impressive debut with the team, v The Yankees aren’t trying to see Bellinger leave town soon.
In that debut, the outfielder/shortstop hit .272 with 29 home runs, 98 RBI and 13 stolen bases. All three stats were big improvements over his output in 2024. Furthermore, Bellinger ranked second among the Yankees in RBI and fourth in home runs.
If New York were to re-sign Bellinger, the only question left is where he would play. Grisham is now entrenched in center while right field belongs to MVP Aaron Judge. Left field is theoretically available, but the Yankees have former top prospect Jason Dominguez ready to take the next step.
Ben Rice is at first base, while Giancarlo Stanton will take the designated hitter spot. With the Yankees still very interested in Bellinger, it’s clear that New York has been thinking about positional issues. As long as a left-handed bat is in the lineup.
The Yankees have had glimpses all season of what Bellinger has to offer in 2025. He helped lead them to the American League Division Series. With New York looking to go on another deep drive, they want Bellinger to stick with him during the drive. But after a bounce-back season, the Yankees will have plenty of competition when it comes to acquiring the former MVP’s services.
