Chauncey Billups has pleaded not guilty to sports betting charges

Portland The Trail Blazers are without their head coach, Chauncey Billupsmost of the season after being arrested on sports betting charges. The latest news regarding Billups is that he is plans to plead not guilty according to the allegations, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

“I have been told by a source that Chauncey Billups will plead not guilty to charges of illegal sports betting,” Charania told NBA Today. “The FBI has two charges against Billups. One is wire fraud and the other is money laundering. Each count carries no more than 20 years in prison. This is a routine charge where they’re going to throw out your charges. Chauncey Billups is going to plead not guilty. This trial is going to be drawn out in 16 months, 16 months. at least.”

Billups was indicted for his alleged involvement in a broad, multi-year scheme to defraud poker players in 2019 when he was not a coach or player.

At the same time as Billups’ arrest, Miami Heat’s Terry Rozier and Damon Jones were also arrested. Rozier was arrested and charged with allegedly deliberately knocking himself out of the game in 2023 so an accomplice could bet and win.

Jones is accused of using his relationship with Los Angeles Lakers players to place bets. In 2023, Jones learned that LeBron James was not playing against the Milwaukee Bucks and told an unnamed conspirator to make a bet. Jones did the same thing in 2024 when he learned from the coaches that the Lakers player was injured and that his minutes would be limited.

As for Billups, it’s hard to see him returning to the Trail Blazers this season, and there’s a good chance his coaching career could be in jeopardy if he’s found guilty of the charges.
