Seattle trades for Marlins reliever to bolster bullpen

The Seattle Mariners and the Miami Marlins agreed to trade on Monday. Seattle acquires left-handed relief pitcher Josh Simpson in exchange for cash. In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Logan Evans was placed on the 60-day disabled list.

The Mariners are looking to compete again after advancing to the American League Championship Series in 2025. They added All-Star infielder Brendan Donovan in the trade during the offseason to further strengthen the roster. The The sailors are clearly not done with the movesnevertheless.

Mariners acquire Josh Simpson

Simpson, 28, made his MLB debut in 2025 with Miami. His performance has been far from ideal — he posted a 7.34 ERA in 31 appearances out of the bullpen — but he still has potential. He’s a guy who can consistently get left-handed hitters out.

At the Triple-A level in 2025, the southpaw posted a much more respectable 3.41 ERA in 29 games played. He also posted a 1.02 VHIP, a .164 opponents’ batting average and 29 strikeouts in 34.1 innings of work.

He could have a chance to make the big league roster. That being said, the Mariners already have two left-handed relievers on the MLB projected roster in Jose A. Ferrer and Gabe Speyer, so nothing is guaranteed.

At the very least, the addition of Simpson gives Seattle additional depth in left-handed relief — which is certainly never a bad thing to have. It will be interesting to see if Josh Simpson can turn things around with the Mariners. He will look to make a strong first impression in spring training.
